the Worcester Telegram Police say checks from stores are fake
STURBRIDGE — Police are warning
residents to beware of a mail scam in which people are sent checks from Wegman’s Inc. along with a letter indicating
they have won a “shopper lottery.”
Each check, for $2,700.50, claims to be drawn on the Bank of America
and indicates the recipient was randomly chosen by computer ballot from stores such as Walmart, Sears or Home Depot. The recipient
is asked to contact a claim agent and then send fees to receive additional money.
Police said the checks are fakes
and the letter is a scam. Residents should not attempt to cash the checks or send money as directed. Anyone with questions
can call Sturbridge police at (508) 347-2525.
